Long before the resurgence of interest in Black voices in country music, The Bonner Family was already there—strumming, harmonizing, and rewriting what country could be.

A family band made up of Jim and Edith Bonner and their four children—Jimmy Jr., Cheryl, Teresa, and Kenny—the Bonners made history in the 1980s as the first Black family to break into the largely white world of country and western music.

THE BONNER FAMILY

Known for their powerful vocals, polished musicianship, and tight familial harmonies, they became a fixture across the California music circuit, earning acclaim on stages like the US Festival, the Palomino Club in North Hollywood, and the Marlboro Country Music Tour.

"You ain't heard country 'til you hear it the Bonner Way."

With performances at the Disneyland Hotel, Orange County Fair, and televised features, the Bonners captivated audiences wherever they went. Their 1986 album Finally, recorded under OL Records, showcased their blend of original songs and covers with a uniquely soulful country style. Every member could sing lead. Every member played at least two instruments.

MAKING MUSIC

The group faced more than just the pressures of music—they faced an industry that didn't quite know what to make of them. But they persisted. Even Colonel Tom Parker, the legendary manager of Elvis Presley, saw something extraordinary in the Bonners. "They're Black... and it works," he said in a private meeting with their manager, Overton Lee.

Now, after decades in obscurity, a resurgence is underway. Their story is being rediscovered by music historians, fans, and filmmakers. A documentary treatment is in development, and a full press kit is now available for media, bookers, and platforms interested in reviving this remarkable legacy.

"To say that they are great would be a gross understatement. The Bonners will become a major entertainment group in the United States."
